Overview
Thread Summary is a Chrome extension that extracts and summarizes AI conversation threads. This privacy policy explains how we handle your data.
Data Collection
Thread Summary does NOT collect, store, or transmit any personal data to our servers:
- ✅ All conversation extraction happens locally in your browser
- ✅ No personal information is collected or stored
- ✅ No user accounts or authentication required
Anonymous Usage Analytics
To monitor API token usage and understand how the extension is used, we collect anonymous usage analytics. This data helps us manage API costs and improve the extension. The following anonymous data is collected:
- Anonymous user ID (randomly generated, not linked to your identity)
- Platform (which AI chat platform you used, e.g. Claude, ChatGPT)
- Message count and character count (to track API token consumption)
- AI model used for summarization
- Extension version
- Browser type (Chrome, Edge, etc.)
- Country (derived from browser locale)
This data is sent to a Google Apps Script endpoint for aggregation. No conversation content, personal information, or browsing history is included in analytics.
Data Processing
When you use Thread Summary:
- Conversation Extraction: Messages are extracted from AI chat platforms (Claude.ai, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok) and processed locally in your browser
- AI Summarization: Conversation content is sent directly to Anthropic's Claude API to generate intelligent summaries
- Local Storage: Extracted conversations and summaries are temporarily stored in your browser's local storage only
- Export: CSV and markdown exports are generated locally and saved to your device
Data Sharing
Third-Party Services:
Anthropic Claude API: Conversation content is sent to Anthropic's API for AI-powered summarization
- Data transmission is encrypted (HTTPS)
- Subject to Anthropic's privacy policy: https://www.anthropic.com/privacy
- We do not control how Anthropic processes data sent to their API
Google Apps Script (analytics): Anonymous usage data is sent to a Google Apps Script endpoint for aggregation
- No conversation content or personal information is transmitted
- Used solely to monitor API token consumption and usage patterns
- Data transmission is encrypted (HTTPS)
We do NOT:
- ❌ Sell or share your data with any other third parties
- ❌ Store conversations on our servers
- ❌ Use data for advertising or marketing
- ❌ Track your browsing behavior
- ❌ Collect any personally identifiable information
Permissions
Thread Summary requires the following Chrome extension permissions:
- storage: To cache extracted conversations locally in your browser
- activeTab: To access and extract conversation content from the current tab
- host_permissions: To inject content scripts into AI chat platforms, make API calls to Anthropic, and send anonymous analytics to Google Apps Script
Data Security
- All data transmission to Anthropic API uses HTTPS encryption
- No data is transmitted to or stored on our servers
- Conversations are only processed when you explicitly click "Extract & Summarize"
User Control
You have full control over your data:
- Choose which conversations to extract
- Delete local data anytime by clearing browser storage
- Uninstall the extension to remove all local data
Children's Privacy
Thread Summary is not intended for users under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to Privacy Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last Updated" date.
